Morison Vol VIII includes (starting on p. 328) a fairly detailed account. Both Iowa and New Jersey fired at Japanese naval vessels (Katori,2 destroyers, and some smaller craft.)
Interesting answer - I didn't know any of the Iowas were involved in a surface action.
USS New Orleans and IJN Katori. New Orleans, Minneapolis, Iowa and New Jersey were involved in the sinking of Katori off of Truk in February 1944. In some accounts, USS Iowa receives credit for Katori's sinking. Both Neptun models.
