Odd thing in a photograph...

Did you ever see a really familiar photo and notice something for the first time? I did last night, looking at the time-worn, aerial port astern photo of the smoking hulk of Mikuma at the battle of Midway. In it, her port TT are splayed outward, which I can rationalize was the result of a large interior blast. But her two aft main battery turrets are sharply rotated toward the port bow, with barrels elevated. At least one of the forward turrets seems to be oriented similarly. Now as far as I know Mikuma was never within visual range of US surface units... so what was going on? Did the IJN have 8" Shin-seki AA shells, and if so that early in the war? Theories, anyone?
