Re: History quiz #35
Interested in the point that British and French were in position to close the GRAF SPEE backway route to Germany in Langsdorf intention if Montevideo battle didn't happen in the meantime. British cruisers in pursuit were not powerful enough in artillery than the GRAF SPEE was prior Montevideo to stop her. But with the STRASBOURG in Pernambuco (Brazil) in October with 8x330mm main guns against 6x280mm the pocket battleship would had had few chance to go through the net and in more the RENOWN was in area. Surely Langsdorf didn't ignored the problem in scuttling decision.
Amazing to know the GRAF SPEE in merships hunt painted a tripod front mast French style with legs in black on her forecastle to confuse it at Brit sight with a French battleship PROVENCE class and flown the French flag! Few sound and no pictures of this. For so much the GRAF SPEE was very respectful with laws of war, wasn't a pirate but a corsair, a noble privateer and Langsdorf was a true knight in war like he shown it .
On September 30, 1939, GRAF SPEE stopped and sank her first victim, the SS CLEMENT, and strictly following prize rules, sank her after allowing the crew to abandon ship. CLEMENT managed to get off a distress signal, and Langsdorf, sent a signal to Pernambuco alerting them that the British crew were in life boats. Aware now that GRAF SPEE was the South Atlantic, the British and French organized hunting groups to find and sink the German ship.
The GRAF SPEE model is by Neptun, and the CLEMENT model is by Aegir.
Identify these two ships (and models) and the historical connection between them:
