Deep in a thread below about jumping mules there was mention made of somebody who seemed to have a lot of "circus" in him. I was just wondering how that realm and that word affects the thought process of people on this board. I have two stories I want to share that have influenced my thinking on the subject.
When I was a kid, our family went to a circus that came to town. Normal stuff. Animals circling around a ring. One of the ponies cut out the side door early. We could see what happened to it outside. The "trainers" repeated threw buckets of cold water in its face. Maybe that is better than beating it.
In more recent years, a breeder I know sold several zebras to a circus. Later the buyer stopped by with pictures of them. They looked terrible. Extremely thin. The guy said that they were okay and looked that way only because they were in training. He explained that they take away their food and water and the zebras only get bites when they respond correctly to what the trainers want them to do. He said they learn quickly when their sustenance is at stake. As you might imagine, "circus" does not have a good connotation in my book.
