Zebra mares 'can' come into heat very early on, like under one year, but do not become fertile till something like 3 or so, if memory serves. So there's no reason to 'fully display' if no stud is 'available', and nature would simply take its monthly course as in all females.
Question: I wonder at what age they are no longer able to conceive? Of course in the wild the older, weak ones get taken down by preditors so maybe no one knows.
