I have enjoyed Temple Grandin's books very much. She has some unique insight into common issues with livestock.
As far as neglect is concerned, my vet sedates my horse...actually nearly every horse before he floats his teeth. My Stallion was sedated when my vet needed to examine his eye for a potential injury. There are many, many instances where it is comon practice for a vet to sedate a horse for a routine examination or for medical care. Does this mean they are not domesticated? On that note, how many people get themselves sedated for dental work? I definately do not believe that because an animal must be sedated for what may be routine care that it is in any way neglected, nor do I believe that says anything about domestication. How many horses are sedated for trimming and shoeing? None of mine ever have, but I know quite a few that are. I think taking proper care of an animal means meeting the physical and mental needs in the least stressful way possible. It may not be possible to attend to a medical issue without causing unnecessary stress and therefor tranquilization is the best way to handle the situation.
This is a good subject which seems to be open to a wide and subjective interpretation. Any other thoughts on the subject?
