With reference to zoos, Temple Grandin had a real good section about that in her book, "Animals make us human". She trained a herd of small antelope (I forget which species) to go into a holding box one at a time for vet treatments. They were under observation for nutritional snd hormonal studies and were having routine blood draws. The handling stressed them out to the point that the blood findings were meaningless. So Temple and her team taught the animals not to fear the box and to stand quietly for their blood draw. It took her a few weeks but once accomplished was invaluable to the study and the welfare of the animals. Her point was that it could be and should be done. It's a good book and I'll say again. Everyone who loves animals should read it.
