George and Joyce have argued to a similar conclusion that any animal who will not stand still to be administered "routine" treatment such as shots, trimming, worming, etc. is being seriously neglected. That touches pretty close to home, so lets talk about that just a little.
To begin this discussion, let me state unequivocally that my zebras will not stand for needles and hoof trimming. If they must stand for treatment, they must be sedated. They recognize and dislike the vet and the dart gun is the only solution without a physical fight to restrain them. So now lets talk about how much worse off they are under these circumstances of neglect.
Let me see....no lions, no leopards, no crocodiles, no hyenas, no worms, plenty of clean food and water, grooming by humans, warm shelter whenever they choose to use it, medical attention to sew them up when they are injured....yeah, I can easily see how someone could conclude that they are seriously neglected.
Having reached such a logical conclusion, lets address the overall problem and see if all our intelligence added together can come up with some logical solutions. Maybe we should just take a broad swipe at it first and then come back and address the cleanup of individual situations later. The broad swipe would be that we need to abolish all zoos. Clearly none of those animals will stand for vet treatment without sedation. Once we get that problem cured, we should be in a good position to address the rest of the world's exotic animal issues, including getting rid of my zebras because they are so abused.
