George, your willingness to provide 'a little understanding' for me is, duh, interesting at best, however, is inaccurate and this is why. You have assumed the voice of 'most' people who own zebras, but couldn't possibly know if all them are providing 'excellent homes' and proper care. I do agree that raising a zebra can be a very fulfilling learning experience, however, it has been documented that in several cases it has been at the expense of zebras lives.
You, as an individual, could 'tame' a wild beast, however, to accomplish true domestication would take generations of selective breeding which, I do not believe, will happen in our lifetime if ever, because there is no foreseeable benefit to justify the time, energy, money, etc.
I do not currently have a zebra, as I have previously stated, but I did raise Tiffany very successfully for 6 years until medical complications forced me to rehome her. I still miss her every minute of every day and will till forever.
My description of a 'pasture ornament' is an animal which is not able to be handled SAFELY at will, which excludes animals in the wild. With that understanding, it is irresponsible for you to state that 'it makes no difference if it spends all day grazing in the pasture', because zebras need periodic care (shots, worming, ferrier, etc) and to not be able to handle a zebra in order to provide these necessities is NOT okay. There have been postings in the past by owners who stated that the only way they could provide these services was to tranquelize their zebras with a dart gun. To me that is NOT responsible ownership, considering the fact that zebras have died from the trama of those ordeals.
Why don't you share the details of your experiences and successes with your zebra, zebras? How many, age(s), how long have you had it/them, etc. etc. Perhaps you could teach all of us.
