Joyce,
To provide you with a little understanding, there are many varying degrees of 'domestication'. To clarify, I don't believe anyone on this message board expects to have a house pet that sits in your lap and licks your face. I believe most people who raise exotic animals do so for an educational and enriching experience, and provide excellent homes for Zebras. I do realize you've had bad experiences and do not have a zebra. However, those of us who still have zebras are willing to devote the time, energy, and financial resources and fully understand the undertaking and responsibilites. Many more people in the world have children (also a lifetime commitment) who have no business doing so...and they end up much wilder than a few zebras.
As far as Zebras being 'pasture ornaments'...this is exactly what they are in the wild. Remember, these are not animals imported from Africa off the savannah, but raised on exotic farms. I'm not sure where you got this 'pasture ornament' quote from, but the bottom line, if the animals are cared for properly, it makes no difference if it spends all day grazing in the pasture. We enjoy our animals and receive fulfillment just working with them. We would very much appreciate keeping your suggestions constructive and positive in the future.
