Amen and Hallelujah! I have come to these realizations by doing all the wrong things. Poor Zanze. Because he came to us with a halter on and I knew that he had all the proper beginning handling, it didn't occur to me to start so far back in the process. We were to leave the halter on and practice with a larger halter over it. However, he was a real Tasmanian Devil about all of that. Just not doable. Then he banged his nose and the halter had to come off for his face to heal. Then the halter games began. I became very sneaky and inventive about getting it on and he became equally crafty about it not happening. (And yes, buckles bite!)
Final chapter? Clicker training. My husband stepped out of the picture because he can't do slow and tiny steps. If you want a mountain moved, he's your man, but not this. We had to undo a lot of negative stuff first but now I can halter him at a moment's notice and I don't have to leave it on him, which I hated. I think I take as much pride out of this achievement as getting my college degree. Maybe more.
