I agree with that theory. When I got my second zebra, a shirt-tail relative that I hardly knew came to see him. She was aparently a horse trainer, one who was more inclined to show people and horses how strong and tough she was. Anyway, Chester was only about 2 weeks old and she walked up to him and said "He's a cute little bugger ain't he" and reached out, grabbed his tail and gave it a jerk. He promptly nailed her with both hind feet in the belly. A few of us watching were fighting laughter so hard we could hardly stand. Being only 2 weeks old, he couldn't do much damage, but was still very strong. She turned all shades of purple and said something along the lines of "they are mean aren't they?" Now she knew better. No way would she ever walk up to a strange horse and do that. But because a stranger walked up behind a defensive baby zebra and pulled his tail, causing him to react as only instinct tells him, he is suddenly "mean." She assumed that because he was small or for whatever reason, it didn't register that he was still an animal, she disregarded comon sense completely. For ever on, she will always tell people that she met a zebra once, and he kicked her in the belly. I am happy to report that he never kicked another person but I always watched for tail-grabbers after that!
