I've inherited my grandfather's western collection and in it is a really old bit. Turn of last century at least. After Sammi Jo's discussion about mullen bits it ocurred to me that this might fall into that category. Thing is, it is really big! The mouthpiece is over 6 inches wide. It is slightly curved, and is a solid twisted piece of iron. (Judging from its rusted appearance.) The cheek rings are about three inches across and there is a set of free moving interior rings that are about two inches across. Perhaps the interior rings are meant to have the head stall attachments and the larger rings are for the reins? Would they use something like this to drive a really big draft horse or maybe a mammoth Jack? Any guesses?
