When Zanze was little he lay down more frequently than he does now. But he does lay down to sleep at night some, but I doubt if it is for long periods of time. And also, they sleep with their eyes open quite a bit too. This is eerie at night because we have an infared on our video camera and I could see his eyes glowing.
No doubt your girl is nervous when you leave her alone because she is programed to have herd members around her at all times. That is why a quiet companion in an adjacent pen is so helpful. It lets the human parents have their shuteye, too. I remember Jason (from TexasZebra) saying that he used a hay bale covered with a striped cloth with his first zebra because he didn't want to get a companion. I don't think he was entirely satisfied with the results.
Even now at almost 3 yrs, I don't put Zanze out of sight of at least me, my husband or one equine. All of our pen arrangements have a place for a nearby buddy. (Even if he doesn't like him too much, like the zorse that Zanze doesn't care for, is a standin for a companion.)
At this point Zanze spends his day pretty much like a horse would. He gets moved form night pen to day pen and round pen, with a romp in beween at liberty, so to speak. He has training sessions with me and lots of scratches in all those hard to reach spots. Oh, for the life of a zebra! And not a lion in sight.
