A bit more about alfalfa that I have gleaned: It is the calcium/magnesium/phosphorous ration that is the issue, as I understand it. It is influenced by growing conditions so not all alfalfas are a problem. For some reason California has shown the most problems. Ponies (like mine that died) and arabians from California that are given a lot of alfalfa have a higher incidence of stone formation. So I am sure there are genetic tendancies involved as well.
