I wasn't refering to feeding exclusively these lower nutrient feeds, but adding them to the diet that is already fed. The horse gets the nutrients needed from the regular rations. Equines are designed by nature to consume large amounts of fiber. I have talked to several vets about feed, just to get a variety of opinions and medical knowledge. Especially when Charlie was sick, which was possibly caused partly by inadequate nutrition on my part. Charlie just needed more than others. I was very eager to correct the problem and talked to my vet about my feeding routine. He encouraged me to continue with the free choice grass hay, saying that with the increase in grain that I was giving him, he needed access to the fiber to keep his gut moving properly. It seemed to me that Charlie is eating less of the hay, but continues to eat all day long at intervals. This keeps his gut moving smoothly. It is very comon in colder climates to feed high fiber feeds to livestock to help keep them warm..and there is also the saying,
"sometimes hay under a cow is worth more than hay in a cow."
