Since you are in no hurry to purchase a zebra, you have time to do the proper homework. I recommend that you subscribe to Animal Finders Guide. I presume it is still being published. You can find all kinds of exotic animal ads there and can call all of the zebra ones with your questions. Ask everybody the same set of questions. You will start to see that not everybody has had the same experience or believes in the same solutions. You will learn a lot and also come to realize that you have to figure out a lot of it yourself.
As far as breeders are concerned, there used to be many of them east of the Mississippi. Not sure how many are still in business, but I can give you contact phone numbers that I have. When I was looking, I found two people in TN, one in KY, one in IN one in LA, one in VA, etc. Of course, there are also exotic animal auctions, one of which is in SC.
Just keep asking questions and learning. Shouldn't take you too long to decide that zebras are right for you -- or not!
