The "proper" term for young equine, horses, donkeys, zebras, mules are all called foals. A male is a colt,and a female is a filly. Western Cowboy "lingo" calls them all colts. (For instance, "Colt Starting") Some old cowboys still used the term, Horse colts for a male and mare colt for a female.
