Loren, Check out thecatlocator.com. We got them for our cats that tend to roam and it has saved us hours of searching and calls to neighbors. We have the one that covers about 2 miles but there is a version that covers a wider area. You can get really good at locating them once you practice a bit. For our cats- this wouldn't be as big an issue with dogs- we have modified the collar a bit. The clip can be filed down to release easily so they can't get hung with it but then you have to find the collar. So we have added rubber bands so the collar usually stays on the neck even when it comes unclipped.
