To reitereate, Sue, as you know zebra babies can be sooooo easy to handle, which is what draws people to them. Carey's stallion being a yearling hasn't yet begun to show his true colors, which is why I've told people to thoroughly enjoy their time with their babies, because as mature adults, that relationship changes dramatically.
We have never heard much from owners of adult zebras (1/2 doz or so), which may mean there aren't many. It has been primarily from owners of newer babies, and then those who later were looking to sell them.
I knew of an adult zebra sold at auction here in FL, and was bounced to three homes in a six-month period. It would simply run thru fences. I then lost track of its whereabouts.
A colt was purchased by a tack store/boarding facility and after about 7 months sent it on down the road, when the novelty wore off and it got too difficult to handle.
And I'm sure there are many similar storys elsewhere...how sad. All we can do is try to educate people as to what the complicated ownership of a zebra really entails.
