Joyce has brought up an interesting topic: the increase of instinct drives with age. Let's see if we can get some discussion going on this. I was having a private chat with Carey of Co. the other day and she brought the idea that young stallions are easier to handle overall than geldings. Gelding having a rather "Jeckle and Hyde" personality. I have to say that it fits my guy. And her yearling stallion sounds like a real sweetie. He can run with the chickens, cats and other barnyard animals. My guy wants to kill all cats, dogs and is not too fond of the whitetailed deer that overrun our place.
Frankly, Zanze's instincts have always been expressed and it is hard to imagine them being more so. If he was ever cute and cuddly, it was because he was so small you could push him around. He's two now and certainly no push over.
I wonder how much hormones influence things. Obviously, Zanze's sex hormones have been changed very early. And Joyce, your mare would have been increasingly under the influence of hers as she aged. Anecdotaly, we expect stallions to get worse as they age, but do they? I've seen quite a few seemingly mellow stallions on various websites. I've seen less about mares. And what happens when they have babies- that's another question.
So let's hear it, Zebra Lovers: How does aging and hormones affect our wonderous beasts?
