Yes, I would love to hear from more people about how their experiences went or are developing. Of course, that is the main purpose of this board, but unfortunately it doesn't reach a lot of those who could be sharing with us.
As far as what the zoo curator told me, I think her response was more severe than reality has indicated. She told me we might be able to touch them, they might even become somewhat tame, but they would never become gentle. They certainly will never be like horses but I am not sure I would describe them in that manner. However, I do understand her intent to discourage amateurs from getting involved with an animal which does require a lot of long-term patience and care. Interestingly enough, after her giving me advice to get a llama, I had a friend who did get a llama. It attacked him and almost killed him. His feedback to me was that if he would have had a gun handy he would have shot it instantly to protect himself.
Anyway you cut it, a wild animal is a wild animal and should be treated as such. But that does not negate the fact that people handle wild animals every day in zoos and game preserves all over the world. To conclude that "I" was not capable of handling a wild animal of my choice only solidified my resolve to try. We have no regrets that we got the zebras, but do have some regarding the way we did or didn't approach the handling of them early on in our experience.
