Regarding your comment about your getting a 'negative' response from a zoo curator, in reality, in most cases, I'd say it was rather accurate. As you well know, adult zebras are not easy to deal with, and oftentimes impossible. As they age in years, their instinctive wild side also matures, and they can become downright dangerous.
Wouldn't you be curious, as am I, for there to be a survey of all zebras purchased as babies within the last say 5 years, and where they are now, as adults. How many are still owned by the same people, are they still
'trainable' or at least 'handleable', or have become purely 'pasture ornaments'. Additionally, as we've heard here over the years, tragically several have died in the care of backyard owners.
Wonder if Nancy in CA has followed up on the ones she has bred and sold, and that she would share how successful the new owners have been. Also, what percentage would undertake zebra ownership a second time.
People who may think they want to raise a zebra need to have as much knowledge as possible before making this hugh decision. They must realize that zebras live at least 20 years and that when they no longer want them, there are NO pleasant alternatives...20 years is a
l-o-n-g time!!
