Yes, Megan. I have one of Nancy Nunke's "bucket babies", Zanze. He is about 20 mos now and was gelded early. (I'm not nearly as brave as you are!) We do alot of stuff with him but you have us beat on what you can do with yours. Not that we haven't tried, mind you. We work with him several times a day, every day. And we will continue to- he has been an amazing experience.
You mention size- this is another question I have about early nutrition. Nancy really stresses high protein for her babies and so we did, up until he was close to a year old and then started slacking off. I went to talk to Bill Rivers (the movie animal trainer, he has a place near us) about training of zebras. He saw a picute of Zanze and said "What are you feeding him?!" He was really impressed with his size, but suggested that we were giving too much high powered feed and should cut back. Later in the visit I met the filly zebra that he had who was exactly the same age as my guy but she was about 2/3 his size. She looked like a strong wind would push her over and still had some baby fuzz. Anyway, I decided that I was glad I had "overfed" him.
Zanze is very similar in his response to strangers. He responds well to ladies of my size and coloring. He seems to judge men by their body language. My husband handles Zanze, too, so that might give him a wider range of "acceptable" models. And he is more reactive when strangers are around, too.
He will step on a tarp and I can flap it around him, but I have only put blankets and ropes on him I don't think we are ready for the tarp....
If you want to see his picture, he has a website zebra-view.com
