Loren, Yes mules are registered. The American Mule Association (AMA), The American Donkey and Mule Society, (ADMS) and the North American Show Mule Association (NASMA) are three well known registries. We mule breeders pride ourselves in producing superior animals. Some mules are out of Champion Horses. We ourselves have a 3 time High Point Jenny (donkey) who traces to the Multi-Champion Black Bart. The Bishop Mule Days Mule Show in Bishop California is the equivalent of a World Horse Show (10 days in length!) With the competitive showing of mules, say a mule that has say Dash for Cash horse breeding is winning everything well guess what happens… Just like a lot of people in the TB world want a Secetariat bred foal! People start looking for Dash For Cash mares to breed their good jack to. But then guess what, some mares just don’t make good mulemoms! They don’t pass on their good points to the mule. Mules are no different when it come to ancestry. In fact it becomes more important because of the hybrid sterility to recreate that genetic success.
They may not be called “Tennesseebians” But there is a Registry for the American Showhorse, (gaited Arabians) “Thoroughwalkers” (sorry got a chuckle out of that one!) I was imagining a power walking horse at 30 mph! “Quarterclydes” hmmm a lot of Quarterhorses trace back to draft type crosses with light horse breeds. Hancock is a well known cow-working horse that had a major impact on the working horse world. He was part Percheron. There is also the American Sporthorse or aka Warmblood (TB and Draft) A registry makes a lot of sense in that it will document ancestry. Look at all the new “designer dogs” appearing. I believe that the “Labradoodle" is nearing acceptance as a breed of itself. There are "Schnoodles", "Puggles" Even "BullShitz"! (No Kidding!!!) There is no such thing as a mutt anymore. Back to the zebra thing, I do think pedigree documentation is important even in hybrids. In fact I have a really tall buckskin mare of unknown parentage and our awesome Bay roan AQHA mare, that I am considering breeding to a zebra stallion of genetic superiority for conformation and disposition. We'll see what happens!
