Hello Loren,
I have been commissioned to write a book for children between the ages of 8 and 12 on the endangered species,Cape Mountain zebras (CMZ). I did one on the Bald Eagle for the publishers, Enslow. This new series will be 3 times the size of the Bald Eagle.I have been in contact with multiple people from the FWS (in the International Dept) as well as multiple people from Africa and no one has an answer. The closest I can come is 1600. There were 1200 in 2000. Given their breeding habits and the high first year mortality rate for foals, I feel 1600 is probably very close to the correct number in 2007.
Even CITES sent me an email and they have no idea. They recommended that I contact the Red List.Indeed, this is a challenge, but I do want to provide the children with the best information available.
Thank you for responding and I will keep you posted.
Thank you, Cheryl
