I have the same haltering battle with my zebra mare. I just changed hers in July and it took 3 hours. She still has not let me put her leadrope back on . It was about 3 weeks before she even let me touch her again. With the male, I put on his halter at least twice a day. I bring him in from the field, tie him in his stall to eat grain, and then lead him back out (or untie him and leave him in). I hope all of his early handling will stick with him as he matures.

I have noticed the same thing about the memory, and also the disadvatages of the long memory if they have a negative experience.
