I think you're right about the Southern Story Teller thing. The defining feature of which is, apparently, that it has to have no point. It's like you can tell where the punch lines are supposed to go, but he never delivers. I'm tempted to say this was just comedy in the 70s, but Hee Haw was different. Foxworthy still tells "jokes." He may not have come up with all of the redneck jokes, but he gave them an insanely sellable (and better) handle. I mean, that's the thing about Clower's version - he says you don't need a book to tell a redneck, but then he proceeds to tell us a bunch of characteristic traits of rednecks that you could put in/read in a book. Plus, his delivery is WAY too awkward and unwieldy. In other words, he criticizes Foxworthy's bit, steals it, and then butchers it.
