Lewis, I've never thought critically about the guitar solo in COFTN, but after listening to it repeatedly (it is awesome) I think I know why it sounds so singular. Mainly, it has to do with what it's NOT. It's not Eddie Van Halen just playing as fast as he can and blowing everyone's mind with virtuosity and speed. It has elements of that but before it just turns into ersatz VH, he goes a different direction and puts some real melody in there. There are enough notes in there for listeners to catch hold of, like a Wanger Flanger-less 37 Seconds solo. Of course it's not Mark Knopfler or Nils what-his-name from Journey, but it has enough of that in there to make it feel strangely familiar. Freud would call this the "unheimlich", what we consider the "uncanny", and say it piques our deepest seated fears. Quiet Riot would tell him to shut up and then make his bedroom shake with all their rock n roll.
