GUITAR GEORGE Boys, I've given it a thought, and I only see it as commentary by Mark Knopfler on London's varied music scene at the time. He seems to describe the scene from several different viewpoints. To the crowd of young boys, the Sultans don't play "what they call 'Rock n Roll.'" But this just seems like one slice of a bigger picture - the whole of which MK paints so effectively in the song. I think one telling hint is that the choruses usually end "with the Sultans of Swing," but by the end of the song, it's "We ARE the Sultans of Swing." Yet another viewpoint, that of the Sultans' frontman. But doesn't it make you feel like MK is behind the Sultans 100%? (Also, remember that later Dire Straits depended heavily on brass instruments - namely saxophone.) P.S. Even though this was posted at 10:30 AM, it was typed at midnight last night. I listened to SOS repeatedly and drank bourbon the whole time I typed it. Looking forward to discussing further in South Carolina. P.P.S. Long Live Pick Withers Mart Knopfler
