Posted by James Yang Xiao Jia is a rare from of Yang Tai Chi that, so I am told by a Shirfu of same here, orginated in Tienjin a long time ago; there was a master or two that migrated to Shenyang, who are now passed away. There are a few these teacher's students still alive here, in their 50's. The movements are smaller and more compact, and the stepping is somewhat like Bakua. Maybe something like you can only find Lan Shou Chuan in Tienjin and Shanghai, as far as I know. How did you locate your Bakua teacher? This "guan shi" in China is complex, and hard to understand. Sometimes it is wonderful, and sometimes it is confusing. What are the basic characteristics of Guo Bakua? Best regards, James --Previous Message--

Wayne,
Thank you for your response. What I mean by "Yang Tai Chi Xiao Jia" is Yang style Tai Chi, small frame. Most Yang Tai Chi I have practiced or seen in China or in the USA seems to be the large frame (big movements, low stances).
There are some of the same classical Yang movements, but the flavor is very different than the large frame. I understand this small frame is still alive and well in Tienjin. It seems to be almost unknown in other parts of China.
Is he or she fairly open and honest with you and other students? I am trying to find a teacher here, and so far I have not been very successful. My Yang Xiao Jia teacher here from last summer seems be cool and not too interested in teaching me, since I moved here a few weeks ago. He was warm, open and inviting last summer, when I visited here for 6 weeks, and discovered him in a local park.
I cannot figure out if I should hang in there with this Xiao Jia teacher and be patient, or he changed his mind about teaching me, for whatever reasons. His wife seems on "my side", so to speak.

: I wish I could be your partner, but
: Shenyang is a long ways away. Which
: Taiji are you interested in?
:
: I understand there is a known
: tradition in Tianjin for Yang Tai
: Chi Xiao Jia.
: I have seen it here in Shenyang, and
: I think it is a rare jewel, if you
: can find a teacher there. It is
: almost unheard of elsewhere, and
: especially in the West.

: Good luck in your training,
