A friend of mine--also a Woolrich fan and a reader of FIRST YOU DREAM, THEN YOU DIE--is being treated for obsessive-compulsive disorder. He said that Woolrich suffered from OCD, part of the reason his career declined in the '60s. My friend said that Woolrich could not be creative unless he engaged in many pre-writing rituals--his cigarettes and ashtray had to be at such-and-such an angle from his typewriter, he had to touch the platen X number of times in a row before writing, etc. Nevins never mentions this, and from what I understand, Woolrich had many problems, but OCD doesn't seem to be one of them. Any ideas?
