Of the two versions of "Preview of Death" / "Screen Test", I much prefer the first one. There is just something almost magical about his non-description of the actress burning to death (he describes the reaction of the detective only) that made both me and my wife squirm with the horror. In "Screen Test", that magic is missing somehow, and the effect just doesn't come across.

: Mike has ably informed you about the
: story titles. I thought I
: would add that "I'm Dangerous
: Tonight" also appears in
: "Vampire's Honeymoon".
: And "Preview of Death"
: appears in a modified form
: retitled
: "Screen Test" in
: "Nightmare".
: Hope this helps!

: : Dear Gail: The story about the red
: dress is "I'm Dangerous
: Tonight" (1937) which was
: collected in THE FANTASTIC STORIES
: OF CORNELL WOOLRICH. The one about
: the actress burning to death is
: "Preview of Death"
: (1934), which I collected in
: DARKNESS AT DAWN.

: I can't remember the title/book that
: I
: read these two wonderful stories
: in. One was about a red satin
: fabric which destroyed several
: unlucky people's lives. The
: wearer of the red gown became a
: killer. Also, there's another one
: that I loved about a silent movie
: actress who's costume catches on
: fire while filming. She was
: caught on film burning to death.
: This was a true story. I'd
: appreciate it if anyone can
: identify these two titles.
: Thanks! Gail
