Lz was not the only one who seemed to have lost their spunk. Frollo, once a rebellious and hateful creature in the shadows, laid on Lobo's front legs like a injured pup, whimpering.
"That way that animal looked at me," Frollo hissed, both eyes popped out and shifting with paranoia. "He thought I was a fool."
It was not like Frollo to act this way. Lobo knew this and was doing his best to stay nearby until he got better. Something in his conscience whispered that Frollo would never be the same ...
"I'll kill it." Frollo clicked his teeth together. Drool dripped from his yellow teeth.
"Master," Lobo remarked knowingly, "if you failed to defeat a tiger the first time then--"
"Don't say that!" Frollo growled at Lobo and snarled. "I hate that word. I'd kill it if I had the chance!" After he said this, Frollo's rage melted away and his face showed a misery that suggested a willingness to go on no longer. "Failure ... I am a failure," Frollo moaned and smothered his face in Lobo's bearded neck.
"But you are alive, that's what matters to me," Lobo testified.
In a muffled voice Frollo sang gloomily, "Only an animal of prey is happy to escape from the jaws of a predator." Frollo removed his face. He rested his chin over Lobo's hoof and stared at the ground, his blue eyes watering and empty. "A carnivore, Lobo, when they see their attacker run off alive, they have failed. That is a fate worse than dying."
He is too hard on himself. Lobo thought. A wind picked up and a sent was caught in Lobo's nostrils. It was the alpha's scent, Lz. Maybe Frollo smelt it too and didn't care, but he showed no reaction. Maybe Lz can snap him out of it. Lobo reared his head foreward and bleated in the wind.
