Hi Jo,
The Minton factory didn't put two impressed conflicting date marks on a piece. If there is an impressed cloverleaf, then the impressed S does not stand for 1889 -- it stands for September. And the S cannot represent both September and 1889. So, the blank was produced September 1850, and the design was put on between then and 1873 as you stated in your last sentence. I know you will enjoy using your Godden book. I am glad that you have ordered it.
