Can't find this marking in any ref's

I'm trying to figure out a marking on the bottom of a creamer I recently acquired. It's an impressed upper-case "A" (it's somehwat faint). I think the creamer looks like it's from the 1950s, but a friend believes it's from pre-1890s. (Sorry, no pic, but I can post one if necessary.)
