Posted by Connie Rogers In earlier works such as Godden's "Encyclopedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks" the R in a sunburst was incorrectly attributed to William Ratcliff. However, after more research was done, Godden provided a corrected interpretation of the mark as being one used by Samuel & John Rathbone. That information is found in Godden's "Encyclopedia of British Porcelain Manufacturers". That is the book I used for identification when I was writing my book. Just this past year a new book has come out by Ian Harvey titled: "Rathbone China Manufacturers Tunstall, Staffordshire 1808 to 1843 -- A history and illustrated record of the china." Mr. Harvey also provides evidence that the R in a sunburst mark is a bona fide mark of the Rathbones. In addition to Anna's suggestions (Thanks, Anna!), if you are interested in learning more about early Minton blue and white patterns including willow and Broseley, I recommend "An Illustrated Guide to Minton Printed Pottery 1796-1836" by Geoffrey Priestman. I have been able to purchase some really lovely early Minton willow on eBay from information out of that book, and the prices were good because the sellers didn't know what they had!
