the precision and coordination of the wolfpack was extraordinary.
Sage the red and white collie femme had bee trailing the elk for an entirely different reason. She followed for lack of anything better to do. And to follow hooved grasseaters was in her genetic makeup. There was something calming about it, something humans had bred there abd couldn't exactly be denied. A herding dog's instincts were strong and never laid to rest. But here in the wild Sage had learned another instinct. That which she instinctively herded also made delicious prey. Not that she had any delusions of bringing one down herself, or even trying. Sage knew it as foolhardy. She was a dainty fem, swift, but lacking in strength. And barely as tall as an average wolf female. Birth in the wild had honed her hunting instinct, but a domestic bloodline had robbed her genetic makeup of ever being as strong as her wild cousins.
Sage watched eagerly as the wolf trio claimed their prey. It was an awe inspiring sight. The fearless, coordinated, ferocious attack ending in victory.
The dog's mouth watered as the scent of blood filled the air. But Sage knew better. Her presence would probably not be tolerated. She had learned that during her brief stay. Wolves could often be prejudice towards their domestic cousin. And Sage wasn't much of a fighter. And she certainly didn't feel like defending her life, or right to stay, today. So with a parting longing glance from her green eyes, the collie moved to follow the elk herd's trail, and briefly hoped the wolves had not noticed her.
