Jesusa listened to the quarreling of her sisters for the whole time they traveled. She had kept herself behind these two while their words clashed.
"But it isn't ethical to fight other wolves," Lamb growled at Cotton, "Peace should always be negotiated."
Cotton glared at her sister. "Hmmph. We are wolves, Lamb. We were meant to fight. Talking is for those with too much brain and no guts."
That was the whole of their arguments: bickering over what was the right and wrong thing to do. The vision of these two wolves never mixed, and their beliefs were strong. Jesusa, on the other hand, kept whatever opinions she had to herself, knowing that they were meant to change eventually.
This trio of wolves stood out. Their fur was shorter, and tightly curled except on the legs, where it was silky instead. They looked like sheep, and even their accents grated like the voice of sheep. Lamb's fur and face were white, Jesusa was also white but her face and legs were black, and Cotton's exterior was pitch with a copper tint in her "wool".
"You're being ridiculous," Lamb said. "Look, if you come with me, I make you see--"
"Make me see!" Cotton barked. "You're the one that needs to see reality. Your ideas of peace never solve anything--they stall!"
"Hmmph," Lamb snorted. "Well, then Jesusa and I are going to The Brotherhood--without you."
"Like hell," Cotton snarled. "Jesusa will be with me in the Kuna pack, where wolves have their senses."
"Guys ..." Jesusa spoke up quietly.
The two sisters didn't hear her. Rather, they started growling harsher words at each other. Cotton even started to bite.
"Guys!"
They stopped fighting and looked at Jesusa.
"If you're going to act this way," Jesusa said, "Then I won't go with either of you."
The two sisters gasped. Never before had Jesusa took her own way. Usually she went one way or the other. Their fighting lost them their favorite sister and now Lamb and Cotton hated each other even more. The two wolves left in opposite directions, their heads hung low with depression.
And now Jesusa was on her own.
Already Jesusa missed her sisters' company. This freedom was strange to her, now her choices could be made herself without the devil and angel whispering in her ear. The only problem was that, without her sister's guidance, Jesusa was confused over who she was and of her view of the world.
Jeusa was following the flow of the river, smelling the ground and trying to identify the many smells within it. The strange wolf stopped when she found Caleb's scent. She looked up and saw him. Her tail wagged, but she was nervous about what to do, so she sat and hoped he would see her.
