tranny problem

I have a '89 toyota 4x4 22re with manuaul trans. when the truck is running i can never get it to go into 1st gear theres no grinding it just feels like 1st gear is locked out. i have to put it in 2nd to get the truck rolling then put it in to 1st. any ideas on what it could be???????
