Posted by Ben This problem has been driving me nuts...please help if you can. The temp gauge starts to rise higher than normal and sometimes gets close to the red during highway driving. Cooling system checks out ok. Replaced temp sender unit...did not help. My friend thinks its an electrical problem because the gauge acts funny. Sometimes when the engine is cold, the gauge will jump up to half way when the ignition is turned on. A few seconds later it will drop to zero. Hooked up a friends combo meter and the problem still shows. Ran new wiring from sensor to combo meter and checked all grounds...no luck. Weird thing is that when I turn the headlights on I can see a jump up in reading on the gauge...when I turn the lights off the temp gauge drops a little. I tried disconnecting as many electrical devices as possible(pulled all possible fuses and relays) that would still allow me to drive the truck and the problem still exists.Forgot to say that there is no evidence of a coolant leak thru the head gasket and the timing checks out What in the world could this be? Thanks for any help you can provide.
