fuel filter replacement

I replaced my rear fuel filter yesterday; got showered with gas and now I'm not sure if I hooked it up correctly (i.e. direction of flow arrow). If it's wrong what (if anything) would I notice?

Also, do I need to change the fuel filter up front by the carb too?
My 'hood diagram' referrences a 'gas filter' on the left there, but when I asked for the part at the store, no-one said "which one, front or rear?".
