That is a common misconsception. Most birds have a very poor sense of smell and could careless if a human has touch thier baby. All foundling birds should be at least be tried to returned thier nests, often a parent bird knows the baby isn't in the nest and hiding the baby in a near by bush is all that's needed to return them to parental care. This is called a feldging and parent bird will continue to care for the bird even if it's "jumped the nest"
