Kim, this is a very good question with many reasons. There are some 350 species of parrot from very tiny, canary size, to very big, 5 foot wing span. There are a few varieties that are blue. Of those 350 some odd species, only two are not protected under international law, CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species. The cockatiel and the budgerigar, both from the out back of Australia.
Why are parrots endangered? There are many reasons. Habitat loss, desirability for the feathers, as food, desirability as pets, loss of numbers in the wild.
In third world countries, poaching for the pet trade is a major problem and although it is often outlawed there is little done to stop it. In some of these countries, selling a baby parrot at a market is the only way these people can make a living. Some countries are actiually recuiting these individuals to assist with eco-tourism so they can make their money by showing the tourists where the parrots live and how they live instead of poaching them.
That is just the tip of the ice burg. If you wish to know more about endangered parrots go to Google and enter the World Parrot Trust. Lots of good reading there.
