morning dove

I found a baby dove, must have fallen from nest. I was feeding it, doing ok for first day. Seen other doves in my side yard, set it out there, with hopes mom would come feed it. NEVER DO THAT, a male dove went over to it, ripped into it, broke its wing before I could get out to it. Now my little baby is gone. Why did it do that? Can someone tell me?
