If I was hiking I wouldn't have been surfing the internet and bought a REALLY nice flint pistol. I took it out to Tom Burch's house to show it to him and found out that he had almost bought it himself. It started life as one of the long barrel Jim Chambers kits. Although it isn't signed, Tom was familiar with the builder and said the rifles the guy builds are in the $7000+ range. Outside of one of the cheapo Tower pistols, I think I paid twenty bucks for mine back in the day, I have never owned a flintlock pistol before. I think I'm going to like this one.
And, like they used to say in the Ronco commercials, BUT WAIT,THERE'S MORE.
I don't want to say too much until I have it in my hands, (should be sometime Tuesday) but there might be another Bess in the next Big Honking match. It has iron furniture and it wasn't made in Italy or Japan.
Being extracted from someplace on the trail by helicopter would have been cheaper than coming home.
