Friendship the Spring Shoot
I do not recall which year I first attended Friendship, it was 1978 or 1979. Although I did not know anyone there I had so much fun I have only missed one in 1991 the year I got married. The way the marriage went I should have went to Friendship! Every time I go I have more fun than the last time I was there. This spring shoot was no exception to the rule. It was fun! The first Widowmaker function was the Big Honking musket challenge the first Sunday. We had 14 musketeers and it took two days to go through the course. The next time we have that many folks going through we will split up into two groups and perhaps two starting times. I had lock problems with my old Bess I lost three shots and I took the lock off three times to adjust the sear spring which was wallered out. Having said this I still won with my ragged old Bess. At the victory dinner most of the Widowmakers and Friends in camp attended. This was great fun, I hope this tradition continues.
The second Widowmaker event was the Defense of Fort Greenville Tuesday afternoon. I confess there was a conspiracy going on! Earlier in the week Jeff Pell said he would go all Bruce Jenner if I could get him on the same team as Susie and Missy. I figured this would be a hoot so I went along with it. On Tuesday afternoon when everybody drew cards somehow Susie, Missy and Jeff wound up on the same team. When everybody else started taking fouling shots Jeff went to my cabin and started changing. The Ladies had been dropping off clothes for Jeff all afternoon. When everybody else was up stairs in the block house here came Jeff in all his glory! Jeff decided to augment his chest with balloons. Two big damn balloons! Jeff had no camp name before this he is now Tetons! Perhaps Grand Tetons. When Tetons started to shoot he noticed the huge bosoms got in the way so he made himself the perfect dance partner by moving the balloons to the middle of his back! The grand plan was for this first ever three “woman” team to win. The two ladies shot very well however Tetons missed a couple and the first ever ladies team came in second by one point. This was the most fun we have ever had during the hot June Fort Greenville. Thanks to Jeff for this. We had two teams with bad knees including Lizard the newbee and Manyklatch. So I allowed a bench set up for the bad knee folks. I may consider making the benches’ available to all just to make it fair. In the fall shoot we shoot Fort Greenville with smoothbores, in my opinion this is more fun than the rifle shoot in the spring shoot. It is cooler and the target is larger and closer.
Our English Widowmaker Simon Coleman made it over for the shoot. Simon bought a new Tip Curtis rifle gun when he was over here during the Widowmaker Gathering two years ago. Of course with the gun laws in Jolly old England this is not an old original gun so it is treated like an assault rifle, he can’t take it home. Simon asked me to sight in his rifle so I did I delivered his rifle to him at Friendship. Simon and I shot all week; he said he had got a whole years worth of English shooting in this one week. Simon was a very happy man! We went on three woods walks together counting the Big Honking. When we shot rifle guns, Simon whooped me like a yard dog with his rifle that I sighted in! I think I was happier than he was.
Shoot Results
I was hoping Muzzle Blasts would run the shoot results in this last issue, as they did not do this I will officially Wing it! Most of the Widowmakers who shot kicked ass! The Ladies Susie, Missy and J9 dominated the ladies matches, with Susie winning the Mountain Squaw. Tetons placed in three of the Woodswalks. One of these was the open woodswalk made for inlines! For the second spring shoot in a row ManyKlatch won the running deer target on the archery range, Manyklatch also did an educational program on how to make primitive arrows from scratch. Jethro won a big NRA medal for his shooting the first weekend, I also think he placed in the Mountain Man. Brad won the Smoothbore Agg shooting the first weekend; I wound up with second place shooting in a driving rain storm Friday morning. I know I am forgetting someone but just remember, the Widowmakers won big.
Friendship, the Fall Shoot
Widowmaker Action Tuesday comes back with the Widowmaker Beer Match and the Black Squirrel Whiskey Match, when the primitive range closes down we shoot The Fort Greenville Smoothbore Match. This is a long but fun day for the Widowmakers
October, during this month we have Possum Branch and the Southeastern. The fall shooting season is gearing up for the Widowmakers.
The Widowmaker Frolic, Jethro gave me his notes on the Frolic and I promptly misplaced them! The only thing I recall from the notes is five people got the Camp Asshole Award for the Charcoal incident during the 2014 Frolic. I am sorry about this folks.
