Went to Shiloh Battlefield, on way home, Sunday. They had a live artillery demo at Ruggles's Battery exact location on Duncan Field, aimed toward Hornet's Nest. Rare to hear artillery reports on a National Battlefield. The tree line in the distance is the Hornet's Nest approx 325 yards away from muzzle of cannon on day of battle and on this day. Whenever infantry was within 400 yards canister loads were placed within their bore. Hornet's Nest got all the artillery's inventory could send their way. 60 +/- artillery pieces concentrated fire upon that tree line for hours.
When the day's battle was over it was said that one could cross Duncan Field and never a foot would touch the ground for you'd be walking on the dead and wounded. The sound of the artillery barrage was heard as far away as Jackson, TN. The ground shook under foot as far as Michie, TN.
