starting the knowledge

I have been wanting to do the knowledge for some years, but have been put off due to learning the runs on a motorbike. A few years ago I went through the windscreen of a car whilst riding a pushbike and this has put me off getting on a bike again. Has anyone done the knowledge by car or any other means. Any info /advice would be truly appreciated.
