Westie - Diabetes

My Westie was recently diagnosed with Diabetes. We've been giving him insulin twice a day and the good news is that his Glucose levels are looking good. For those of you who have a Westie who has diabetes, how is he/she doing? Has their eye site been affected in the long term, have there been any negative affects, etc?
